Happy World Hearing Day 2023!
Did you know that in Tanzania, hearing loss is a growing concern?
According to the Tanzania Ministry of
Health, an estimated 1.5 million Tanzanians are affected by hearing loss, and
this number is expected to rise due to factors such as noise pollution, ear infections,
and aging.
The Tanzanian government, through
the Ministry of Health, has been taking steps to address this growing concern.
In 2021, the government launched the National Ear Care Program to increase
awareness and promote the prevention of hearing loss, as well as to provide better
access to diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, the Ministry of Health has
been working with partners to implement screening programs and provide hearing
aids to those in need.
On this World Hearing Day, let's
focus on the importance of safe listening as a means of maintaining good
hearing across the life course. Last year, WHO launched the World report on
hearing which highlighted the increasing number of people living with and at
risk of hearing loss. It emphasized noise control as one of the seven key
H.E.A.R.I.N.G. interventions and stressed the importance of mitigating exposure
to loud sounds.
This year's theme, "To hear
for life, listen with care" reminds us of the importance of preventing
hearing loss through safe listening practices. We can protect our hearing by
turning down the volume on our devices, taking listening breaks, and using
earplugs or noise-canceling headphones when in loud environments.
Let's all commit to protecting our hearing and spreading awareness about safe listening practices, especially in Tanzania where the government and Ministry of Health are taking steps to address this growing concern.
