The Global Action Plan on Child Wasting
The UN's Global Action Plan on Child Wasting aims to prevent, detect and treat acute malnutrition among children in the worst-affected countries through a multi-sectoral approach that addresses maternal and child nutrition, food, health, water and sanitation, and social protection systems. Five UN agencies -
- The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),
- The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR),
- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),
- The World Food Programme (WFP) and
- The World Health Organization (WHO) -
- Scaling up the coverage of nutrition services, including the prevention, detection, and treatment of acute malnutrition, to reach the most vulnerable children, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
- Improving the quality and accessibility of maternal and child health services, including strengthening health systems and addressing barriers to care.
- Increasing the availability and affordability of healthy diets for young children, girls, and pregnant and lactating women, including by improving food systems and addressing market failures.
- Improving water, sanitation, and hygiene services to reduce the risk of disease and promote healthy child development.
- Strengthening social protection systems, including cash transfers and food assistance, to support the most vulnerable families and communities.
It's also important to note that, a targeted and coordinated
approach to reach the most vulnerable children and communities, including those
affected by conflict and displacement, is crucial to effectively addressing
acute malnutrition.
